Jump Off 15,000 ft – Best Surreal Feeling Ever!

New Zealand, North Island Series

Several years ago, when I was scrolling my Instagram post, a feed of my friend caught my eye and I was fascinated - a video of her jumping from the plane in Alpine, Switzerland. I knew that sky dive might be the most extreme and dangerous sport in the world, but since then it became my second top list to do before I die (first bucket list is going to the outer space - know it sounds silly but it really motivates me to keep working hard).

Short story, I had a job from my company to assisting my VIP clients to New Zealand last December. I didn’t know that I would be traveling to NZ that early and actually got a bit of free time before going home. I persuaded my colleague to accompany me and seek for possibilities if we can get a special price for sky diving (she has connection with NZ suppliers though and we actually got $90 off discount for marketing visit haha).

After some time contemplating in our tight schedule and client problems, on January 3rd we finally take a long self-drive from Auckland to Lake Taupo for 3 hours and decide to make it happens. We stay overnight nearby the Lake Tekapo Airport before we jump on the next morning. That night I was so nervous thinking if it was right to spend money just for a ‘suicide’ experience. If my parents know I was really sure they would be freak out.

The next day I woke up I no longer feel nervous and feel very excited. We drove to the Taupo Tandem Sky Diving which based in Lake Taupo Airport. There was around 12 people, including me, lining up and seating around the front desk. The friendly staff asking us to fill the online registration form and sign the health and safety agreement. Our weight also has to be measured for tandem master pairing and safety reason. One of the staff briefed us generally about tandem sky diving and how their company work, what’s the dos and don’ts (like you are STRICTLY PROHIBITED to touch the flying equipment), and what freefall packages they have for us to choose. They have 12,000 ft, 15,000 ft, and 18,500 ft with different camera package.

Since this is my bucket list and probably the first and last sky dive, so I picked Guru Package - 15,000 feet freefall with flying cameraman (unfortunately the 18,500 didn’t have tandem cameraman available on that day). Basically, I will fly with 1 tandem master and 1 cameraman fly with us and shoot the whole experience from take off until landing.

We entered the equipment room at the back side of the office. Our belongings have to be stored at the locker. The tandem masters are helping us to wear the flying suit and safety gears. They are very friendly and keep asking how was my feeling and told me that it would be really fun. It made me feel less nervous and look forward for the excitement. I was on the second batch, so I could see how the first batch do from the land. We were very lucky that the weather was very nice (NZ weather is so unpredictable!). The first batch was look amazing and successful that it keeps me stay calm.

My turn is come! Our batch was 6 tandem divers + 2 solo divers (cameraman) + 1 pilot. Andrew, my certified tandem master, did the buddy check and make sure my gears are complete and alright. We boarded to the plane that looks like a safari plane and took off! A mixed feeling started to bother me but thankfully controllable because of the amusing view from the top. Andrew informed me the flying procedure : my head has to be leaned on his shoulder before and while jump off the plane and I can relaxed after he tap my shoulder 2 times, and I have to bend my knees as high as I can before landing to prevent injury.

Soon before reaching 12,000 feet, the pilot alarmed us with a trumpet sound. It’s a sign that the first jump will begin for those who choose the lowest height package. 3 Korean couples of are jumping off one by one and I just said OMG for couple of times after hearing their screaming. The door was closed again and we fly to 15,000 feet. Andrew seat behind me and he attached our gears together. He asked if I’m ready. I DON’T but no way back!

After he gave me an oxygen, he dragged me near the exit door and ask me to pose in front of the exit camera. It was too sunny I can’t open my eyes widely (sipit eh) so I didn’t really care about the exit photos. You can see later at the video below that Andrew pull my head to his shoulder and few seconds after we actually FLY!! What I was thinking that moment is how to breath? Why the hell I forgot how to inhale and exhale? There is no way to scream because it was really fast (200 km / h speed) and actually not scary at all. Andrew tapped my shoulder and told me to pose in front of Jarren (our cameraman). I could finally breath and relax. I tried to pose as much as my hand can do but surely I couldn’t control my face as the wind slap me pretty hard x). Despite of my ugly bulldog face, I really enjoy every surreal moment in the sky. The lake and scenic mountains view are spectacular. After the parachute was set up, Andrew let me try how to maneuver. We had fun spinning around for several times. I found out that Andrew has flying experience for 3,500 times for the last 8 years. Wow.

Landing time was coming after only around 2 minutes flying (I need more T_T). Andrew took over the control and direct me to bend my knees as mention before. We landed safe and sound with a happy smiley face. He asked me to spinning around like a child for the last closing video hahaha. I did it!!! And will do it again next time for sure (Swiss or Dubai for next list and 20,000 feet?)!

Thank you Andrew, Jarren, and Taupo Tandem sky dive team to make it happen!! Here is my video. To answer your Qs, the package total price is normally NZ$565 for my chosen package. You can check their website https://taupo-tandem-skydiving.business.site/. They are number 1 list in trip advisor! Feel free to ask me more in comment below about sky dive in NZ and use my referral to get discount!

Cheers!

South Kuta Bali : Hidden Beaches in a Day!

When you ask a foreigner (non-Indonesian) wherever you are outside the country, if they know Bali, they will surely answer YES. Who doesn't know Bali? In facts, Bali nowadays is so much different with Bali several years ago. More tourists come every year that you can find the traffic jam is no much different with Jakarta. However, even Bali is now a mass destination, with the never-ending inner beauty and hospitality, it still attract all the people with different ages and interests.

For me, who has visit Bali more than 10 times in last 5 years, there are so many places that we can explore more, and it won't be enough time to visit them all. More interesting beaches are revealed and known as hidden/secret/virgin beach, that will also become a mass tourist area in a few years ahead.

I'll share some hidden beaches that you can visit in only ONE DAY in South Kuta Area.. But I have to remind all the readers that you HAVE to keep below beaches out of waste and keep yourself safe.

Suluban Beach

Heading through the South of Kuta by car or motorbike, it's really easy to find Suluban Beach through Google maps or Waze. It takes around 1 hour drive or 25km from central of Kuta. Located near Uluwatu Sacred Temple, the secret beach is well-known for surfers. Prepare some small cash amount with local IDR currency since you'll find difficulties to find ATM in surround area. You need to pay parking fee for only IDR 5,000 per vehicles and take a walk for around 5 minutes before find out the divine beach cave.

The surfers need to swim or walk aside the cave wall.
The waves are totally great for surfing!

Suluban from the Top

Nyang Nyang Beach

Only five minutes drive from Suluban, Nyang Nyang is a true beauty of virgin white sand beach and during some season, this site is famous for Paragliding site. You have to walk quite far from the top hills to reach the virgin beach (I couldn't make it trough the beach since we don't have much time). Some abandoned sailing boat could be found along the beach and some of them have been retouched with colorful paint and murals.

the road which cut through the hills

Nice for prewed photo ;)

Nyang nyang beach view from paragliding site

Melasti Beach

Leaving Nyang Nyang, you can stop by for lunch in local or western restaurants on the way to Melasti Beach. This beach is popular for swimming, sunbathing and canoeing, and has similar view with Pandawa Beach. One of the different is, Pandawa has a cliff with hand-sculptured art. By the time I arrived in Melasti, the wind is quite strong and the wave was very high so it's quite dangerous to swim and it's not possible to do canoe. So we couldn't do much things there. Beach umbrellas and chairs are rented for IDR 100,000 (negotiable), sometimes with free fresh coconut.

Green Bowl Beach

Not far away from Melasti in Ungasan Area, Green Bowl has unique caves with bowl shape with a small temple inside the cave called Pura Batu Pageh. This hidden beach is suitable for surfing, swimming and snorkeling, but there is no lifeguard available here so always be cautious. To reach the cave you have to walk down the hundreds step of stairs but it will be paid off once you there. Some of the visitor did picnic inside the cave, you can do that too but please bring your own trash bag. The area is also the habitats of macaques, but they're not aggressive unless you give them food.

NB: the local sellers and masseurs here are quite unfriendly and keep pushing you to buy the souvenirs or have a massage. Do not ask the price or show interest if you're not going to buy. You can refuse them kindly.

There are more more hidden beaches in surrounding area but you can't visit all of them in a day, since you need more effort to reach most of them. It's recommended to wear comfortable hiking sandals, bring a hat & sunglasses, sunblock, drinking water and most important thing, trash bag! It is a really sad thing when I see a beautiful place become dirty.

Don't leave anything but footprints, don't take anything but photos!

*all photos above are RAW and non-edited.

Michelle

Days in Diocese Asian Youth Day 2017

Joyful Asian Youth!
Living the Gospel in Multicultural Asia

Peserta DID AYD mengunjungi Masjid Istiqlal (©Theo)
Itulah tagline dari perjumpaan orang muda Katolik se-Asia bertajuk Asian Youth Day 2017.

Selama tiga hari kami berdinamika di paroki-paroki tempat kami live in.

Asian Youth Day Joss Joss! (©Wendy)

Acara dilanjutkan dengan perayaan misa konselebrasi penutupan DID AYD 2017.

Salam Joyful, Joss!

Daydreaming

Raga tertahan lambat di Selatan
Jemari menari, mata menajam berjam-jam
Fokus coba dituju lagi detik melaju
Ketuk di sisi satunya, melawan kantuk

Jiwa terulur terbit di Timur
Kaki berpijak meninggal jejak
Menantang fajar yang tak kunjung terkejar
Perasaan syahdu berganti candu

Pikiran mengudara bebas ke Utara
Hembus bayu berlari di sela pinus
Tirta memuara tanpa suara
Hanya aku sendiri di puncak berdiri

Hati mendarat senja di Barat
Serpihan merah jingga merekah
Deru ombak bersinar perak
Siluetmu harapan dalam angan

Mata angin bukan persoalan
Rindu membawa raga ini dalam pelarian

Lost in Taipei

Hello again! This is another late post - trip of mine. And this time let's get lost in Taipei!
I got a free seat from Featera Indonesia to go to Taipei last September. They were actually held a reward night event for best sales achievement of 2016, and my mom also won the reward. But i'm not gonna tell further about Featera nor how i get the free ticket. Before I went to Taipei, i just kept wondering, where should I go there on my free times???

1. Ximending Night Market

If you love to eat and shop, then here is the perfect place for you! You could found delicious authentic and traditional foods & snacks, also fancy & cute things with good quality (they said it made in Taiwan not made in China, so don't ask for discount price! haha)

Get there by MRT to Ximen Station (blue line)

Me after 8 hours flight
Delicious Mee Soa
A Friendly Golden Retriever
A really good culture in Taiwan. Even they separate the trash in the market

2. Longshan Temple of Manka

The most well known temple in Taiwan, the Mengjia Longshan Temple was built in 1738 by settlers from Fujian as a gathering place for Chinese settlers. It is located in the old village part of Taipei.

3. Taipei Fine Art Museum

Located within the Taipei Expo Park, the Taipei Fine Arts Museum is one of Taiwan's most popular art museum and exhibition hall. Hosting a wide variety of international and Taiwanese art, the museum is located just north of the city center, and is very easily accessible. (guidetotaipei.com)

Get there: From Longshan station, heading east to Taipei Main Station (blue line), transfer to red line and heading north to Yuanshan station. Take a walk around 15 minutes to the museum

From this place, my trip was accompanied with my old friend, Willis, who currently study in Taipei. He became my tour guide for a whole day! Yeay thanks!

Walking on sunny day

4. St. Christopher's Church & Tatung University

Enjoying a nice weather with your childhood friend were priceless. We walked down the streets for kilometers and talked about many things before deciding which place to visit next.
We passed by a catholic church and a university with a vintage building that even used for pre-wed photo shoot.

Just remind me of Hogwarts
Ramen for lunch!

 5. Sunset Hunter at Xiangshan Nature Trail

We finally went to the famous Elephant's mountain (known as Xiangshan Nature trail in Taipei). It is quite far away from the north west to the south east of Taipei city. But for a best Taipei 101 view, I think it is worth to try. We took the bus to the MRT station and went to Xiangshan (I forgot but i think we passed more than 10 stations to get there). Arrived in Xiangshan station, we have to walk uphill for approximately 2 kms before we found the real trail to the top of the mountain.

How many steps already???
This is

6. Get the Tummy Full at Shilin Night Market

Of course hiking made us super hungry. We head back to the north west to the well-known Shilin night market (where the fried chicken 'shihlin' originally come from). Get ready for one-pack tummy a.k.a buncit.

10. Other night markets

There are so many night markets in Taipei that you can explore every night and bring plenty of cash! I shop many things there until no Taiwan dollars left in my pocket ;')

Traveling Tips for Indonesian:
1. Bring charger's adaptor. Taiwanese has the same electronic plugs with Chinese (Two flat holes) with 110 Volts.
2. Know the weather, since typhoons are frequently happen in Taiwan, bring the suitable clothes and also an umbrella.
3. Stay connected with unlimited high speed internet access. You can get the traveler sim card for 1/3/7 days or even 30 days in the airport upon your arrival.
4. Getting everywhere is so easy (if you know mandarin / english). Get the MRT and travel maps from your hotel / airport for free.
